What is Prosopagnosia?

Prosopagnosia, in other words 'face blindness' is a neuropsychological condition in which people are unable to recognise faces. People with prosopagnosia have regular cognitive except they cannot identify faces including their own.

There are two types of prosopagnosia: Developmental and Acquired. Developmental Prosopagnosia comes from birth. Acquired Prosopagnosia usually happens to people after physical brain damage.

They do use different compensatory strategies in their everyday lives to identify people surrounding them, themselves in the mirror, in the photographs, etc. Movement, voice, clothing are some of the compensatory strategies, and these strategies are different for each.

There are several misconceptions developed around prosopagnosia. Such as prosopagnosics' visions are distorted or blurred. Prosopagnosics are not distorted nor blind, and they can see faces. Why it matters?

The awareness of prosopagnosia is crucial as it is a rare and not a very well known condition, it is difficult for people who have this neurological condition to be diagnosed. Diagnosis is also crucial for the safety of the kids with especially developmental prosopagnosia as they may mistake their parents for strangers.

It is essential for every individual to form relationships. For prosopagnosics, this may be a little bit of a challenge. People can also misunderstand them. They can find themselves in stressful social situations, and yet they may avoid from social interactions. In both cases, they may develop social anxiety and depression due to the inability recognising people puts them in stressful social situations.
